Today as I was chopping carrots, simmering onions, rinsing peas and cutting ham I was delighted to be preparing soup. Soup for me warms the soul, ignites the senses and brings back wonderful memories. Let's rewind the clock 15 years as we invited a new collogue to our house for a home cooked meal. She was newly graduated from college and starting life on her own. As our schedule was packed full on Wednesdays from office duties to evening ministry there was a short window for dinner. So, we invited her and her roommate over to eat with our family. She eagerly accepted the invitation and then the question came that will forever be a beautiful memory for our entire family...what are you cooking? I very enthusiastically responded "Split pea soup!!" - she looked at me like I had two heads. I was perplexed and I asked if she liked Split pea soup, to which she responded "Umm, no" - it was a moment in time that stands still for me, this is a family favorite, who doesn't like split pea soup, everyone likes split pea soup. Well apparently, not - ha, I had no idea!! My friend and her roommate graciously came over and mustered up the strength to try the soup...we were all on the edge of our seat...well, what do you think?! They both liked it, no loved it, well actually asked for the recipe later that year!
Every time my home is filled with the wonderful aromas of this soup my soul is filled with grand memories of friends who have since moved away. I am grateful for the way God brings people into our lives and the stories we can share with one another.
My beautiful friends, you know who you are - you will forever have a piece of my soul. ~Much love~
ps. my daughter came home and upon stepping into the house her nose ignited, and she exclaimed with joy "Split Pea Soup!!"
